Concert pitch has wandered enormously. Surviving instruments and tuning forks put historical A anywhere from about 392 hertz up past 465, varying by city, by decade and by whether the piece was for a church or a theatre. Bach and Handel were working a long way apart on the dial. The 440 standard arrived by international agreement in 1955, which makes it younger than the microwave oven.
