Design Description

Egyptian afterlife procedure was specific. The heart went on one pan of a balance, the feather of Maat on the other, Anubis at the beam, forty-two assessors in attendance and forty-two declarations to be recited in front of them. A heart lighter than the feather or equal to it passed. The standard was equality, which is a harder target than it sounds.

The scales in this design carry a sun in one pan and a crescent in the other, the upright banded in triangles, a leaf at the top, the whole thing squared on a dark plinth. BALANCE IS CHOSEN.

Two pans, both loaded, holding level. The beam stays flat for exactly as long as somebody keeps adjusting it.
