Design Description

The name is Arabic, garbled. Yad al-Jawzā', the hand of the giant, travelled through medieval Latin transliteration and came out the other side as Betelgeuse. The first letter is a scribal error that stuck for eight hundred years. Roughly two thirds of the named stars in the sky carry Arabic names for the same reason: while Europe was between libraries, that work was being done elsewhere.

Cracked weathered letters trace BETELGEUSE IS WATCHING in heavy strokes, a bursting light standing in for the eye doing the watching. A skull icon, faded data codes and a barcode scatter through the design like evidence from a dossier somebody has been keeping for centuries.

Something that bright has been in view of this planet the entire time anybody has been here to look back at it.
