Design Description

By 1582 the Julian calendar had drifted ten full days out of step with the seasons, so Pope Gregory deleted them. The fourth of October was followed by the fifteenth. People rioted in places, over wages they believed they had lost to the gap, which tells you something about how strongly a calendar is felt as a real object rather than an agreed convention.

Earth at the centre, wrapped in concentric rings, the zodiac running around the outside, January 2026 marked on the dial. 1° shift every 72 years sits at the right edge. Along the bottom: Cosmic Clock, Precession of the Equinox.

A calendar you would need twenty-six thousand years to use once. Somebody worked it out anyway, and this is the face of it.
