Babylonian astronomers cut the ecliptic into twelve equal arcs of thirty degrees each, some time around the fifth century BCE. Before that the sky was described by whichever constellations happened to lie along the sun's path, at whatever irregular widths they came in. Twelve equal slices turned the sky into arithmetic, which meant positions could be calculated forward rather than waited for.

Twelve zodiac signs ring a wheel in fine gold linework, each holding its slice of the circle around a compass star blazing red and cream at dead centre. AS ABOVE, SO WITHIN, SO BEYOND traces the outer edge in an elegant arc, sun and moon standing guard either side, a small flame marking the base.

BETELGEUSE sits in tiny lettering right at the heart of it. Even a wheel built to hold the whole zodiac makes room to name a favourite.
