Design Description

Twins arrive at unusual rates among the Yoruba. The town of Igbo-Ora reports one of the highest twinning rates recorded anywhere, and Yoruba culture built an entire practice around it. Twins are ìbejì, they carry particular standing, and when one dies a carved ère ìbejì figure is made and cared for as the missing half.

Two teardrop forms meet point to point at the centre, held inside a set of concentric rings, with marker dots at the cardinal edges. The Nommo are the ancestral pair of Dogon cosmology, twinned, amphibious, arriving from the sky. Two halves meeting, drawn plainly. Everything said about them starts from the pairing.
