Shrink the Earth to the size of a basketball and the breathable atmosphere becomes thinner than a coat of varnish. Three quarters of the air sits inside the first eleven kilometres, which against a radius of six thousand three hundred is a rounding error. That is the whole of it. Everything that has ever breathed has done it inside that film.

Two cupped hands, and the whole planet fits inside them. She wears a crown of coral flame, eyes pale and steady, forearms wrapped in links as she holds the Earth just below her heart. Close enough to feel it, high enough to see all of it at once.
