Carbon gets assembled inside red giants when three helium nuclei collide in near-simultaneous succession. The reaction works because of a particular energy resonance, which Fred Hoyle argued in 1953 had to exist on the grounds that carbon exists and we are here discussing it. Experimenters went and looked. It was there.
