Design Description

Fourteen European states met in Berlin over the winter of 1884 and 1885 and agreed the rules for partitioning Africa between them. Almost every border on the modern map descends from that meeting and the decades of deal-making around it, which is why roughly a third of African borders run as straight lines.

Straight lines are what you draw from a table.

The continent sits filled solid, with the internal borders drawn as thin gold seams. Every line a treaty, a war, or a ruler's pen, laid over a shape that predates all of them. AFRICA IS THE SOURCE runs underneath in plain capitals.

Those seams went in over the last century and a half. What you descend from was in place a very long time before anyone drew them.
