Design Description

Ron Eglash spent years measuring African design and found self-similar scaling running through it. Village layouts where the compound repeats the shape of the settlement, textiles built from a motif that reappears at four sizes, cornrow patterns following the same recursive rule as the braid inside them.

Fractal geometry, in use for centuries before European mathematics gave it a name.

The continent is drawn here as a lattice, fine gold lines triangulating edge to edge, a starburst flaring where the mesh runs densest.

Put the brightest point near the middle of Africa and you have drawn a claim rather than a decoration. Everyone alive traces back through here.
