In Blombos Cave on the South African coast somebody drew a crosshatch pattern onto a piece of ochre about seventy-three thousand years ago, and it stands as one of the oldest drawings anybody has found. The oldest known Homo sapiens fossils came out of Jebel Irhoud in Morocco. Roughly three hundred thousand years old.

The continent takes shape here in gold, its outline filled with symbols that once carried meaning the way today's words do. Alkebulan: Mother of Civilization, said plainly across her shape.
