Design Description

The Benin bronzes were cast by lost wax, and the walls of some pieces run about a millimetre thick. European metallurgists who examined them in 1897 assumed the technique had to have come from somewhere else, because they considered work that fine beyond what they expected of a West African foundry.

It had been running in Benin City since roughly the thirteenth century.

A mask with hard edges, ceremonial lines and machined ones together, black cut through with orange, mounted on a starburst shaped like impact.

It reads as something recovered from a dig site and something assembled in a shop, with equal confidence in both directions. Astro soul. Whichever way you read it first tends to be the way you keep reading it.
