Design Description

Photograph the sun from the same spot at the same clock time every week for a year and it traces a figure eight in the sky. The shape is called an analemma, and it comes from the tilt of the axis combined with the fact that the orbit is an ellipse, so the sun runs a little fast in one part of the year and a little slow in another. It takes a full year to draw and about thirty exposures to record.

Her crown was rolled by hand, section by section, the way it has been done for a very long time. Between her palms she lifts an orb with a starfield inside it, one long elliptical path traced around the outside.

Two kinds of patience in one picture. The hands that made the crown, and the hands that spent generations watching the sun walk its road.
