A lunar month runs about 29.5 days and a year runs 365, which divides into roughly 12.37 moons, so anybody watching long enough arrives at twelve with a bit left over. That leftover is why calendars need patching, and why twelve shows up independently in cultures separated by whole oceans.

Twelve panels, twelve creatures, each in its own jewelled frame like a window in a very old building. A green stone at the centre throws a compass burst out to all of them.

Ancestral Code runs beneath the wheel, which is what a zodiac is. A sky indexed so it could be handed to somebody who had yet to be born.
