Yoruba facial marks are called ilà, and they were read the way a passport is read. A pattern told you the lineage, the town, sometimes the compound, cut in childhood by a specialist and carried permanently. Most families stopped the practice within the last two generations, so the marks now mostly appear on elders.

Half of her face is carved and half is bare. Her left runs dense with the marks of a ceremonial mask, zigzag and ridge and fill, a language cut into wood by people who knew exactly what they were saying. Her right is smooth and bare and present.

ROOTED. The carving is where you come from. The bare face is what you are doing with it today.
