Design Description

On 30 June 1973 a Concorde prototype lifted off from Gran Canaria, met the moon's shadow over Mauritania and flew inside it at Mach 2, across Mali and Niger and down into Chad. The crew held totality for seventy-four minutes. The best any fixed spot on the ground managed that day was seven minutes and four seconds. Seven astronomers were aboard, and the flight still holds the record.
