A female hornbill seals herself into a tree cavity with mud, leaving a slit barely wide enough for a beak. She stays in there for the whole nesting period while the male brings food to the gap, dozens of times a day, for months. The entire arrangement runs on one narrow opening and two birds keeping their side of it.

A hornbill opens its wings in gold line, a sun resting at one shoulder and a crescent moon at the other, feet planted on a spiral. Behind it a lattice of straight lines and star-points holds the circle steady.

Day in one hand, night in the other. The messenger has been making this flight since well before there were maps to fly it by.
