Design Description

When a massive star collapses, the neutrinos escape first. They pour straight out through the star while the light is still fighting its way to the surface, which buys astronomers a few hours of warning. It happened in 1987, when detectors in Japan, Ohio and Russia registered a burst about three hours ahead of anybody seeing the star.

There is now a network built for exactly this. Detectors around the world watching for that burst, ready to alert everyone else in time to point something at the right patch of sky.

Elliptical orbit lines cross and re-cross like a page from an observatory log, every labelled point tracking a piece of the same unfolding story. SUPERNOVA PENDING sits at the top in plain clinical type.
