Design Description

The master builder of a Batammaliba house carries the title otammali, which translates as one who creates or builds well with earth. The work is seasonal. Walls go up in the dry months, roughly December through February, when mud will take a shape and keep it.

Here the facade stands square and frontal, its doorway ringed in bands of orange and cream, a gable above it, a solar wheel turning overhead. TATA SOMBA. ROOTED IN COSMOS.

Tata Somba is the name that arrived from outside. Batammaliba is the name the builders use for themselves. The house has stood through both.

A building that outlives its own renaming has settled the question of whose it is.
