The moon keeps one face turned toward us permanently. It rotates exactly once per orbit, so for the whole of human history the far side stayed out of view, and every person who ever looked up saw the same half. Luna 3 photographed the other side in October 1959. The images came back grainy and the terrain turned out to be completely different.

A crescent moon holds two faces at once. On the gold side, a woman's profile rises clean and unbroken, a small lotus opening where her chin meets the curve. On the other, the same shape stands pieced together from fragments, mosaic-rough, still finding its edges. THE ASCENSION settles below in steady letters.
