Baobabs hollow out as they age, and people move in. Across southern Africa there are documented baobabs that have served as a bar, a shop, a shelter, a post office and, in one case in Australia, a lockup. The tree keeps growing around the cavity and stays healthy while doing it.

Several standing today have been radiocarbon dated past two thousand years.

A baobab stands rooted at the centre of a stamped seal, its trunk glowing gold where the light gathers, its leaves settling into a deep quiet green. UBUNTU arches overhead and COMMON HUMANITY answers beneath. Sun rays and compass points frame the seal.

A tree that spends two millennia housing whoever turns up is making the argument on its own.
